History
Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote "Das Lied der Deutschen" in 1841, setting it to the melody Joseph Haydn had composed in 1797 for the Austrian emperor.
The song has three verses. Only the third, beginning "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit", is the national anthem, and the last two lines are repeated when it is sung.
The first verse, beginning "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles", and the second are not part of the anthem and are not sung at official occasions.
