Romania
English Translation
Awaken, Romanian!
Awaken, Romanian, from the sleep of death
Into which the barbaric tyrants have sunk you!
Now or never, forge for yourself another destiny,
Before which even your cruel enemies shall bow.
Now or never, let us prove to the world
That Roman blood still flows through these veins,
And that in our hearts we proudly preserve a name
Victorious in battle, the name of Trajan!
Written during the Revolutions of 1848, Romania's anthem began as a revolutionary song calling on Romanians to awaken and fight for freedom.
After being associated with resistance to communist rule, it was adopted as the national anthem in 1990 following the Romanian Revolution.
The anthem invokes Emperor Trajan and Romania's Roman heritage, declaring that "Roman blood" still flows through the nation's veins.
