Chile
Himno Nacional de Chile
Chorus
Dulce Patria, recibe los votos
con que Chile en tus aras juró
que o la tumba serás de los libres,
o el asilo contra la opresión.
Que o la tumba serás de los libres,
o el asilo contra la opresión,
o el asilo contra la opresión.
Fifth Verse
Puro, Chile, es tu cielo azulado,
puras brisas te cruzan también,
y tu campo de flores bordado
es la copia feliz del Edén.
Majestuosa es la blanca montaña
que te dio por baluarte el Señor,
y ese mar que tranquilo te baña
te promete futuro esplendor.
English Translation
National Anthem of Chile
Chorus
Sweet Fatherland, receive the vows
with which Chile swore upon your altar
that you shall either be the tomb of the free,
or a refuge against oppression.
That you shall either be the tomb of the free,
or a refuge against oppression,
or a refuge against oppression.
Fifth Verse
Pure, Chile, is your blue sky,
pure breezes also cross you,
and your flower-embroidered countryside
is a happy copy of Eden.
Majestic is the white mountain
which the Lord gave you as a bulwark,
and that sea which peacefully bathes you
promises you a splendid future.
Chileans usually sing only the chorus and the fifth verse of the anthem, even though the full anthem is much longer.
The original independence-era lyrics were strongly anti-Spanish and were later replaced with more conciliatory words after relations with Spain improved.
The anthem is famous for describing Chile as "a happy copy of Eden" and celebrating the country's mountains, ocean, and natural beauty.
