Schweizerpsalm (German)

Trittst im Morgenrot daher,
Seh’ ich dich im Strahlenmeer,
Dich, du Hocherhabener, Herrlicher!
Wenn der Alpenfirn sich rötet,
Betet, freie Schweizer, betet,
Eure fromme Seele ahnt
Gott im hehren Vaterland!

Salmo svizzero (Italian)

Quando bionda aurora il mattin c’indora,
L’alma mia t’adora, re del ciel!
Quando l’alpe già rosseggia
A pregare allor t’atteggia;
In favor del patrio suol,
Cittadin, leva la tua voce a Dio!

Psalm svizzer (Romansh)

Cura l’aurora dal di
Colurescha il tschiel,
Ves jau tai en glisch e splendura,
Ti, sublim e glorios!
Cura che l’alp splendura,
Uraziuns, Svizzers libers, uraziuns,
Che l’olma pia senta
Dieu en la patria nobla!

English Translation

Swiss Psalm

When you appear in the dawn’s red glow,
I see you in a sea of radiance,
You, sublime and glorious one!
When the Alpine peaks glow red,
Pray, free Swiss, pray,
Your faithful soul senses
God in the noble fatherland.

Switzerland has four official languages, the “Swiss Psalm,” is sung in each of them:

  • German: Schweizerpsalm

  • French: Cantique suisse

  • Italian: Salmo svizzero

  • Romansh: Psalm svizzer

Schweizerpsalm officially became Switzerland’s national anthem in 1981.

Before 1981, Switzerland used “Rufst du, mein Vaterland” as the National anthem, which had the same melody as “God Save the King” - very confusing internationally!
