Maamme

Oi maamme, Suomi, synnyinmaa,
soi, sana kultainen!
Ei laaksoa, ei kukkulaa,
ei vettä, rantaa rakkaampaa
kuin kotimaa tää pohjoinen,
maa kallis isien.

Sun kukoistukses kuorestaan
kerrankin puhkeaa;
viel' lempemme saa nousemaan
sun toivos, riemus loistossaan,
ja kerran laulus, synnyinmaa,
korkeemman kaiun saa.

English Translation

Our Land

O our land, Finland, land of our birth,
ring out, golden word!
No valley, no hill,
no water, no shore
is dearer than this northern homeland,
the precious land of our fathers.

Your blossom, still enclosed in bud,
shall one day burst forth;
our love shall yet raise up
your hope and joy in all their splendor,
and one day your song, O native land,
shall echo ever more gloriously.

Finland's anthem was originally written in Swedish as Vårt land ("Our Land"), and its melody is also used by Estonia's national anthem. While the two countries share the same tune, the lyrics are completely different.

The anthem is based on an 11-verse poem, but today only the first verse (and occasionally part of the last) is typically sung at official events and sporting occasions.
