Bayang magiliw,
Perlas ng silanganan,

Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati’t pagsinta,

Chosen Land

Beloved country,
Pearl of the Orient,
The fire of the heart
Burns within you.

Chosen land,
Cradle of the brave,
Against oppressors,
You shall not yield.

Across your seas and mountains,
In your breeze and blue sky,
There is beauty in your poetry
And song for your cherished freedom.

The sparkle of your flag
Is a shining victory;
Its stars and sun
Shall never fade.

Land of the sun, of glory and love,
Life is heaven in your embrace;
It is our joy, when there are oppressors,
To die for you.

The melody was composed in 1898 and originally performed without lyrics; Spanish lyrics were later written in 1899 before being adapted into Filipino.

It is now officially sung in Filipino, and performing it in other languages is generally discouraged.

Unusually, it includes a line about dying for one’s country, reflecting strong patriotic themes.
