The lyrics were written by Paula von Preradović, one of Austria’s most notable female poets.

In 2012, the lyrics were updated to explicitly include women (“Töchter und Söhne” - daughters and sons), making it more gender-inclusive.

The anthem emphasizes Austria’s geography (mountains and the Danube) as well as its cultural heritage.
